Rockfish Go With the Flow

May 2009
It’s easy to spot the rockfish in our Kelp Forest exhibit; they’re usually bobbing in place, sometimes upside down or sideways. A gas-filled sac called a swim bladder helps them hover in one spot without sinking or swimming.

These spiny fish live in many parts of the ocean. Often sold as "rock cod" or "red snapper," some rockfish populations have declined by 98% since 1970 due to overfishing and habitat loss. You can help rockfish and other fish in trouble by using our Seafood Watch guides to make sustainable seafood choices.
