Sardines to a Sanctuary

Get a mini-history lesson about the beginning of the fishing industry in Monterey Bay and its designation as a National Marine Sanctuary.
Chinese fishermen built a village near the current site of the Monterey Bay Aquarium around 1850 and began the area’s first commercial fishing venture, selling dried squid and fish to Chinese markets. The village burned to the ground in 1906, scattering residents and crippling their thriving industry.

At the height of the sardine-fishing boom in the 1930s and 1940s, Cannery Row processed 250,000 tons of fish a year.
